Peloton issues recall for its Tread+ exercise machine

Posted By Legal Team | May 10 2021 | Bicycle Accidents, Firm News

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on March 5 issued a recall for its popular at-home Peloton Tread+ exercise machine after multiple incidents occurred, including the death of a six-year-old child and injuries to dozens of others who were sucked in underneath the product.

In a statement, CPSC said it believes the Tread+ poses serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures and death. The federal agency urged consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately.

This video demonstrates the hazard to children posed by the Tread+. At least one incident may have occurred while a parent was running on the treadmill. Reports suggest possible harm to a pet and damage to objects like toys which are sucked beneath the treadmill, as well as possible harm to the user if the he or she loses balance.

Previous incident raised suspicions

The recall came less than a month after Peloton itself released news of the child’s death by the machine and CPSC’s announcement of an investigation into the incident. The federal agency is continuing to investigate known incidents of injury or death.

Peloton is offering a full refund for the $4,295 machine, including its 32-inch touch screen that allows runners to exercise with the aid of instructors. The company said it is working on a repair to be offered to customers in the coming weeks.

What should consumers do now?

  • Stop using the Peloton Tread+ if there are small children or pets at home.
  • If consumers must continue to use the product, CPSC urges consumers to use it only in a locked room to prevent access to children and pets while the treadmill is in use.
  • When not in use, the Tread+ should be unplugged and stored, with the safety key removed from the device and out of reach of children.
  • Report any Peloton Tread+ incidents to CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov or to CPSC’s Hotline at 800-638-2772.

If you or a member of your family suffered injuries while using the Peloton Tread+, you may be eligible for damages suffered during the incident. Consult with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago to determine if you have a case.
